It's already been quite a year for Betty White: a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild (which she discusses in the "Entertainment Tonight" clip above), talk of a Daytime Emmy nomination for her role on "The Bold and the Beautiful," and a very well-received Snickers ad, which aired during the Super Bowl. And things are only getting better: in a move that will delight the nearly half a million members of the Facebook group that agitated for it, White will host "Saturday Night Live" this season. Not sure you'll watch? Maybe the lineup of sketches from White's "Saturday Night Live" episode, which we have brought back from the future*, will change your mind: you can see it after the jump.
*It's not actually from the future. I just made it up.

Hey guys! Remember J.Lo? Come on, yes you do. Jennifer Lopez? She was a fly girl? With a prominent rear end? She was half of "Bennifer," in The 90's, when journalists were just figuring out that if you combined the names of two celebrities who were dating, it would be hilarious? Well, anyway, she is still alive. And this week she hosted "Saturday Night Live"! The recap is after the jump.
Man-meat cougar plaything Ashton Kutcher hosted this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live," and he did a good job of it! Check out this week's recap after the jump.

So, this week, James Franco hosted, and everybody hoped he'd be a "stitch," because he's been doing this guest stint on "General Hospital" lately, and that reeks of self-awareness or at least the ability to be generally fun-loving. And you know what? He was a great host! More on how he was great after the jump!
For those who follow pop culture, it can seem like the case against "Saturday Night Live" is forever being made by some critic or other. Some will say it hasn't been funny since Will Ferrell or Tina Fey left the show; some will trace the rot to the post-Chris Farley era; still others think Farley himself was the harbinger of decay. And frankly, that this week's host -- Taylor Lautner, above -- was surely tapped for the gig because of the likelihood that he'd attract teen and tween viewers and not because of (to put it charitably) his largely untested comedy chops is not the best advertisement for the show's current quality. But there is a case for "SNL" to be made, too, and it's after the jump.

Blake Lively hosted this week's "Saturday Night Live," and she, first of all, was better than January Jones, which was a huge relief. I know that all blonds on shows bloggers watch are not the same blonds! But Serena on "Gossip Girl" is sort of a snooze, and who knows from Blake Lively before she ambled into that role in the first place, all creamy limbs and pert breasts and sort of looking like a young Ellen Barkin, before Ron Perelman and Todd Solondz took turns ruining her.
Blake Lively mostly lived up to her name, and also kind of up to the name of the delicious '80s cottage cheese, in that she was both lively and she kept her appearances in sketches light. She was so light, in fact, that one of the most memorable bits of the night, the digital short, "Shy Ronnie," starred musical guest Rihanna. More like Shy Lively? Find out after the jump!
Yep, the battle between Conan O'Brien and Newark Mayor Cory Booker is still going on -- and it's hotter than ever. Last night on "The Tonight Show," Conan pulled out all the stops by explaining how his new alliance with Elizabeth, New Jersey will eventually help him to "crush" Newark. Watch the clip above to learn how he's going to do it, and click "continue reading" for a full recap of last night's late night TV.
continue readingLast night, after suffering through the latest installment of our national Brett Favre nightmare, we were rewarded with "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon's" ode to Yacht Rock. The audience, guest Kristen Wiig, and Fallon himself participated in some nautical-themed "shared experiences" throughout the episode. The crowd was given semaphore flags, captain's hats, and pool noodles that they used to make "waves" for a sailboat to glide across. One unsung highight: How amazing did Roots drummer Questlove look in his captain's hat? It was the most glorious hat/afro combo since Oscar Gamble's 1976 baseball card.
But really, all that was just the warm up act for the face-melting fury of Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind," backed up by The Roots and special guest Michael McDonald. Hit "continue reading" below to see Cross's performance, and a web-only bonus performance of "Sailing."

Last night, "Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update Thursday" thought it was too cool for a cold open, and got right into the news. It was either that or the show realizing that it made a mistake last week by kicking off the Thursday episode with a great opener, and their "SNL" premiere on Saturday with a dud. Maybe it's a sign that the cast only has one good opening bit in it per week; or maybe it was just a slow news week. Either way, it didn't matter, because last night's episode was pretty good.

The cast of "Saturday Night Live" has missed out on a lot since the show's been on hiatus. Pretty much every famous person on the planet has died, politics has gone down a bizarro rabbit hole, and yo, I'mma let me finish, but Kanye West had one of the best outbursts of all time. Of all time! So there was plenty of fodder for Seth Meyers and company to have a hilarious show, and with Amy Poehler on board for the first two episodes, they had every reason to nail the season's first "Weekend Update Thursday." And they did, mostly.
