Aziz Ansari, Jason Woliner Hit Trifecta with Judd Apatow
November 24th 2009 at 3:34pm by RobbTodd

Aziz Ansari says that some people think his alter ego, Randy, is funnier than he is. While that may not be true, the character he developed for the Judd Apatow flick "Funny People" is funny enough to headline his own movie: The "Parks and Recreation" star and his "Human Giant" co-creator Jason Woliner pitched three movies to Apatow, according to Variety, and Apatow shocked them by taking all three. Woliner is set to direct.

Here are the pitches:

1) A cosmonaut has to go back to space to clear his reputation.
2) Two guys who work for a motivational speaking company hit the road.
3) Raaaaaaaandy!

I'm sure the first two will be funny (and were, to the fans of "Human Giant" and "Reno 911!" who've already seen versions of them), but the real excitement has to be over the Randy movie. The man makes jokes about Darfur, and if you can make that funny, you can make anything funny. He even has a DJ named Old Youngin' punctuating jokes with scratches and cuts instead of rimshots.

Randy is basically what you'd get if you crossed Soulja Boy with Dane Cook, and the movie will have to be rated R because it will likely set a record for most profanity. (At least then Trey Parker and Matt Stone will have some much-needed motivation to up their game.) So, for the uninitiated adults out there, enjoy the EXTREMELY NSFW videos after the jump to get an idea of what the movie is bound to be like.

Tyra Isn't the Only One Who Likes Being Naked
September 23rd 2009 at 3:05pm by CharlotteCowles

Tyra turned heads last night when she told Larry King that she likes being naked. But unlike doffing one's weave, stating one's love of nudity is hardly novel; according to sources like Eliza Dushku and Heidi Klum, many celebrities love being in the buff. Or at least, they love talking about loving it. And why not? When you look like the aforementioned folks, lots of people kinda like to think about you naked, so giving them a little nudge in that direction can't hurt. It would be different if, say, Alec Baldwin talked about his habit of eating lasagna naked, or if Danny DeVito said he preferred to watch football sans pants (sorry). After the jump, I've made a little roundup of celebs who love their birthday suits, for better or for worse. (Note: the clips do not show nudity, but rather, allude to it.)

"Funny People," In a Nutshell: From the Bullpen
August 6th 2009 at 3:25pm by WillEdmondson

[13:28] Tara Ariano: This was the first movie that we were going to recap together but watch separately (since I'm still in California), and I have to say, it just wasn't the same.
[13:29] Will Edmondson: Oh, hi Tara. Glad I could catch you between your manicure and pedicure to talk about Big Movie Wednesday. Can you see the screen, or are there cucumber slices in your way?
[13:29] Tara Ariano: I am a professional. I only need one eye.
[13:30] Will Edmondson: Good to know. But no, after watching all two and a half hours of "Funny People," I can see why you'd need a spa day. That movie was an undertaking. But I still enjoyed most of it.
[13:30] Tara Ariano: I'm not actually at the spa, you know. The TCA Press Tour is still happening. I ducked out last night so see it, and I'm drained.
[13:31] Will Edmondson: (ALLEGEDLY.)

CBS 2009 Fall Preview
"Accidentally on Purpose": 2009 TCA Summer Press Tour
August 3rd 2009 at 7:00pm by TaraAriano

We all had a pretty good idea why, before the panel for "Accidentally on Purpose" began, hotel employees passed out little bowls of condoms. (If you don't, check out the trailer above.) But Skittles? Turns out that, after Jenna Elfman's Billie has a one-night stand with Jon Foster's Zack, she tells her friends that sleeping with him was like eating candy -- specifically: "He smelled like a Skittle." Elfman -- late of long-running ABC sitcom "Dharma and Greg" -- seemed not to want to highlight the similarities between the premise of her new series and Judd Apatow's "Knocked Up" ("Accidentally" creator Claudia Lonow pointed out that it's based on a memoir that was being written around the time "Knocked Up" was in theaters), but rather to stress how long she looked for a sitcom follow-up to "Dharma" and how excited she is about this show: "I feel like I won the lottery, and I count my blessings every day."

How about that title? Is there any evidence that Billie's pregnancy is not as accidental as it seems on the surface? "I think that she wasn't aware, perhaps, how much her subconscious wanted it," said Lonow cautiously, adding that neither Billie nor Mary F. Pols, author of the book on which the series is based, got pregnant on purpose. She also points to two (anonymous) female friends of hers who had dalliances with much younger men: for one, it didn't work out; the other married her baby's father and had another child with him. (Should we expect the same for this non-traditional couple? Who knows.) Fans of his work on "The Daily Show" will be pleased to learn that Larry Wilmore plays Billie's obstetrician; fans of '90s nostalgia will also be psyched that Grant Show -- of the original "Melrose Place" -- appears here in his first (intentionally) comedic role. Will he have occasion to make it onto The CW's revamp? Show was noncommittal. Perhaps we'll find out at the "MP" panel tomorrow....

Seth Rogen vs. Katherine Heigl: Fight!
July 31st 2009 at 12:27pm by WillEdmondson

Lots of people -- including famous ones -- don't seem to like Katherine Heigl very much; recently she's gotten some particularly bad press. Last week Newsweek.com published an article titled "Why Is Katherine Heigl So Annoying?." Then, yesterday, her "Knocked Up" co-star Seth Rogen and director Judd Apatow weighed in with their opinion of the "annoying" actress. Wouldn't you know it, they don't seem like her either.

Heigl told Vanity Fair in 2007 that "Knocked Up" "paints the women as shrews," while the men look 'lovable.'" She went on to say that it was "very hard [for her] to love the movie." Rogen responded to those feelings yesterday on Howard Stern's radio show, sarcastically musing that her new movie "The Ugly Truth" "looks like it really puts women on a pedestal in a beautiful way." Added Apatow, "I hear there's a scene where she's wearing...underwear...with a vibrator in it, so I'd have to see if that was uplifting for women." (Heigl discussed that scene with "Access Hollywood" in the clip above.)

Apatow went on to add, diplomatically, that Heigl was "totally cool" and that they didn't have a problem on set (he does have three more movies to worry about), but Rogen wasn't done: "It's not like we're the only people she said some batsh*t crazy things about. That's kind of her bag now." Yikes. Someone give Heigl's publicist a hug.

Last Night's TV: Hank Crosses Jill, and "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" Is Back
July 31st 2009 at 10:39am by CharlotteCowles

On last night's "Royal Pains," Hank encountered trouble in paradise when he inadvertently stole one of Jill's patients, a children's book author with a serious heart condition. See the full episode, above.

Speaking of stealing (and cheating, and lying), "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" began its second season last night, and "Big Brother" brought some more heated competition. On a different note, ABC dished up reruns of "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice." See the full roundup after the jump.

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
Judd Apatow Pitches "Funny People," Outs Jon "Stewart"
July 31st 2009 at 10:24am by RobbTodd

"Funny People" director Judd Apatow told Jon Stewart that his latest film completes Apatow's "trilogy of sex, marriage, and death" (sex having been covered by "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and marriage by "Knocked Up"). "Funny People" is about a comedian who is terminally ill.

Apatow, who just signed a three-picture directing deal with Universal, had plenty of time to bust Stewart (a.k.a. Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz) for trying to pass as a Gentile, tell a lewd joke about what he did when Bill Kristol was on "The Daily Show," discuss how he lost the cover of Time to some guy named Obama, and pretty much ham it up while getting in a nice plug for "Funny People," which stars Adam Sandler, Aziz Ansari, and Apatow fixtures Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, and Jonah Hill.

Check out the behind-the-scenes look at "Funny People" after the jump. It has a lot of old standup footage of the film's stars.

Last Night's TV: "The Philanthropist" Reclaims His Dollars, and "America's Got Talent" Reveals Quarter-Finalists
July 30th 2009 at 10:33am by CharlotteCowles

Happy Thursday, folks! It's been an exciting week, what with apocalyptic thunderstorms here in New York and my esteemed colleague Tara doing battle at the TCA frontlines in Pasadena. TV-wise, it's been pretty busy as well: just after NBC announced its renewal, "The Philanthropist" got all cops-and-robbers on us, with Teddy in hot pursuit of an identity thief. See the full episode, above.

The excitement continued on "Top Chef Masters," where Art Smith proved that chefs can actually (gasp) be friendly, funny people. On "America's Got Talent," the judges had to crack down as they picked the quarter-finalists; meanwhile, "Monsters Inside Me" made me think seriously about purchasing a face mask. See the full roundup, after the jump.

The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien
Judd Apatow Tells Conan O'Brien That Men Are Idiots
July 28th 2009 at 12:23pm by HannahLawrence

Judd Apatow is pretty high on my list of ineligible celebrity men that I can't help gushing over. My favorite aspect of his moviemaking skill is that his plots are based on events that have really happened to him; watch the clip above from Apatow's interview on Conan to find out which scene from "Knocked Up" was inspired by an exchange he had with his then-pregnant wife. And if the clip from his new movie, "Funny People" (also above), is truly representative of Apatow's talent, I might have to find out more about this "Leslie Mann" chick.

Click "continue reading" to hear more from Apatow as he talks about what it was like to direct Mann in a sex scene with Adam Sandler.

Judd Apatow Talks About "Funny People," Is a Funny Person
July 23rd 2009 at 5:21pm by CharlotteCowles

Yesterday, Judd Apatow -- seen above chatting with James Lipton in an early peek at this Monday's new episode -- gave an unsurprisingly hilarious interview about his career in comedy at a preview of his upcoming film "Funny People" (T-minus nine days until its release). A few choice topics: Paul Rudd being too fat in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin"; prep-schoolers disliking "Freaks & Geeks"; and the first time Adam Sandler saw his...well, you can read it for yourself.
