"What's a Coastie" Isn't Offensive Because Coasties Aren't Offended
December 16th 2009 at 3:59pm by HannahLawrence

Madison, Wisconsin is currently in the middle of a big controversy (and it's even bigger than trying to find the snowplow driver who caused the "Wisconsin Snowmen Massacre," above). The source of the hullabaloo comes from a rap video entitled "What's a Coastie," made by University of Wisconsin-Madison students Cliff Grefe and Quincy Harrison. The video claims to explain the term, which refers to East Coast or West Coast students who bravely attend college in the Midwest, in the name of new experiences. You can see it, along with a personal revelation, after the jump.

Campus Cops
G4 Planning "Campus Cops" Reality Show
November 19th 2009 at 5:39pm by WillEdmondson

Above, the glorified hijinks of "Campus Cops," a USA series in which campus police hit on college co-eds. It was not a reality series. Not intentionally, anyway.

I grew up in a college town, and then left to go to actual college, so for my entire adolescence, I had one sworn enemy: Campus "police." I say "police" because these guys are obviously not actual cops; they're just vigilant soldiers in the war on fun, tasked to sniff out and destroy any semblance of good times before they become actually memorable. These guys will pull you over for going 25 in a 20 miles per hour speed-limited parking lot, literally threaten to call your parents while riding a Segway scooter, and generally make Paul Blart look like Jack Bauer. If you gave campus "cops" reflective sashes and a book of detention slips, they could be hall monitors in elementary schools -- and they'd do more good there than on their respective college campuses.

So what's the next logical step to dramatize this "noble" profession? Why, a reality television show, of course. G4 has signed up for "Campus PD," a reality TV series about campus cops and the students that loathe them. G4 President Neal Tiles explains that his channel's target audience loves "high-energy cop shows," and "With 'Campus PD,' we join real police teams and head to college towns, where the students — and their everyday lives — will prove highly relatable to G4’s core young-male audience.” In other words, this show will focus on campus cops busting parties filled with guys in G4's target audience...and they think this is a good idea? One thing's for sure: If "Campus PD" ever busts an Olivia Munn appreciation-themed LAN party, there's going to be a riot.

Camille Further Proves Her Unworthiness for Harvard in 18th Birthday Mess
October 26th 2009 at 5:05pm by CharlotteCowles

Oh, Camille. Don't college counselors teach you anything these days? I guess their instructions may not be quite explicit enough: you're supposed to avoid expulsion (fail), you're supposed to get good SAT scores (which she apparently does, or so she says), and you're supposed to do lots of extracurriculars (which she's trying to do, but was spectacularly foiled by our darling Jessie in the "NYC Prep" season finale). Maybe your expensive prep-school advisors didn't specify that you should avoid hosting well-publicized, booze-soaked 18th birthday parties with strippers, but then again, such advice would be more of a parent's job, and we know that they too are more focused on your SAT scores than your obvious lack of social grace and proper decorum. While most of the bad behavior bases were covered (and documented) at her birthday party -- underage drinking, fishnet tights, nipple pasties, stripping, and makeouts -- our little Camille still has plenty far to fall. I used to look forward to the arrival of her skinny little envelope from Harvard, but now I'm afraid that worse fates await our headbanded heroine.

"Early Show" Anchor Harry Smith Has a Man-Crush on "Dude Perfect"
September 28th 2009 at 4:22pm by CharlotteCowles

The giddy smile, the over-zealous chuckle, the integration of the word "dude" into his vocabulary...Harry Smith has a man-crush, there's no doubt about it. The bald, bespectacled "Early Show" anchor looks like a kid on Christmas morning when he meets the Texan college boys behind "Dude Perfect," the hoop-happy Youtube sensation of which my esteemed colleague Will was initially dubious. Above, three of the guys explain their basketball-tossing techniques and admit how long it took them to make the shots; however, when they attempt anon-air demonstration of their mad skillz, they fail to deliver. What can I say, Harry...that's college boys for you.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Jimmy Fallon's Intern Videos: A Conspiracy?
September 22nd 2009 at 11:08am by CharlotteCowles

Jimmy Fallon's video contest for college interns was a pretty crafty idea. "Late Night" gets a full semester's worth of unpaid comedic servitude, and some college kid gets a free laptop while we all laugh at him. But the twisted nature of this plan has even more potential than we first thought: could it be that Jimmy actually has no intention of selecting an intern, and will instead garner all of the college-related humor he needs from their audition tapes? Why should we limit ourselves to one funny-looking co-ed when we could see hundreds? Especially when their videos so neatly correspond to one another, as they do in the clip, above.

"Greek" Star Jacob Zachar Talks About Fake Frats, Sheila the Landlady, and Being "Rowdy Rusty": Q&A
September 10th 2009 at 3:49pm by CharlotteCowles

Jacob Zachar, better known as Rusty on ABC Family's "Greek," chatted with us recently about the show's third season, which aired its second episode on Monday. Jacob gave us a few hints about plot twists to come, including a future feud between Rusty and his nerdy roommate, Dale, who will in turn be haunted by his one-night-stand with Sheila (their frisky landlady). Will Rusty continue to take walks on the wild side, or will he hit the books? Let's just say he'll be earning the nickname "Rowdy Rusty." For the full interview, hit "continue reading."

"Greek" Star Amber Stevens Talks Undie Runs, Credit Card Debt, and Her Cameo on "The Hills": Q&A
August 28th 2009 at 8:04pm by CharlotteCowles

Amber Stevens, who plays Ashleigh Howard on ABC Family's "Greek," sat down with us today to chat about the show's third season (which premieres Monday!). She gave a few juicy tidbits about her character, who became the president of the Zeta Beta Zeta sorority last season: apparently, Ashleigh will be hashing out her relationship with bad-boy Fisher (Andrew West, who is also Amber's real-life boyfriend), and struggling with her new presidential responsibilities. Other things to look forward to in the coming season? A campus-wide Undie Run for charity; a spy-themed party; and some unlikely hookups. See the full interview, after the jump; if you need a quick cram session on the past two seasons, watch the video above. We also have every full episode, here.

Decorating a Dorm Room Might Be Harder Than Getting into College
August 19th 2009 at 1:48pm by HannahLawrence

I used to think the hardest part of college was getting in, but thanks to this clip from "The Early Show," now I know I was wrong. The hardest part is decorating the lightless and dirty-carpeted dorm room the school assigns to you.

It takes a lot more than color, pictures of friends, and some storage bins to make your school-issued dungeon into a palace. And though it's a valiant attempt, the "Early Show's" makeover misses a few key points. Like those stylish curtains: They're a good idea, but rooms usually have ugly, permanent ones already glued up. And all that cute extra furniture (like that cheap "laptop" table and those foot rests) are pointless because some drunk kid will destroy them during your first floor party.

Finally, "The Early Show" is dead wrong if its producers think those decorations will endure four years of college. I'd like to show them what one cup of warm, skunked beer would do to those cardboard storage boxes.

The Colbert Report
Stephen Colbert and Congressman Jared Polis Funnel Beers
August 18th 2009 at 12:51pm by WillEdmondson

Stephen Colbert's "Better Know a District" series has already made 65 (mostly Democratic) congressmen look ridiculous; last night, Colorado congressman Jared Polis gleefully became number 66. Polis represents Colorado's second district -- which includes Boulder, Vail, and other small Colorado mountain towns -- and is the first openly gay congressman to be elected as a freshman. He once also said that Congress was "a lot like going back to college," which is more than enough fodder for Colbert to break out the beer funnel and turn the interview into a frat party. Enjoy the hilarious interview, above.
