"Family Guy" Non Sequiturs Explained!: Episode 8-13: "Go Stewie Go"
March 15th 2010 at 2:09pm by WillEdmondson

Last night, "Family Guy" paid homage to "Tootsie," and if that sounds like a weird premise for an episode, it is. But, it did allow for a few silly non sequiturs, and of course, a lot of borderline-offensive ones. You've done it again, Seth MacFarlane! Let's talk about the episode after the jump.

"Family Guy" Non Sequiturs Explained! Episode 8-11: "Dial Meg for Murder"
February 1st 2010 at 10:19am by WillEdmondson

Last night on "Family Guy," Meg fell in love with a convict, Stewie facilitated some love at his "sand retreat," and Peter "fell in love" with a breeding bull. Love was everywhere in the episode, but we don't care about any of that, do we? No, it's all about the non sequiturs, and last night we had some pretty good ones...and one really bad one. Let's explain and grade them, after the jump.

Still Don't Have Winter Olympics Fever? The BBC Can Help
January 25th 2010 at 5:14pm by WillEdmondson

The Winter Olympics are only a few weeks away, which is great news if you like sports, happiness, sunshine, and smiles...and bad news if you're a tree, apparently. Above, the Vancouver Olympic Committee shows off the new speed skating oval, the roof of which was built entirely out of lumber milled from trees killed by pine beetles. The organizers are declaring it an architectual feat, but the pine beetles probably have the last laugh here, right? Just saying, Greenpeace!

Anyway, aside from the pine beetles, Canadians, and five to ten hockey fans left in America, it's hard to sense any "Olympics Fever" in this great nation of ours. Personally, I blame NBC for this -- because every problem on television seems to be NBC's fault these days -- but thanks to the Internet, we can solve this problem. The BBC has whipped together some pretty awesome animation to promote the games, and it's waiting for you after the jump.

Seth MacFarlane Might Get Fourth Fox Animated Series
January 18th 2010 at 5:27pm by WillEdmondson

There's word on the Internet that at this Winter's TCA meetings, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said that "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane might get a fourth primetime animated series on the network. Said Reilly:

"He's stretched thin. We've got one other show we're comtemplating with Seth and looking to broaden our animation brand out too. I love working with the guy, but our plan is not all Seth, all the time. he has something up his sleeve that's animated, so we're going to continue to be in business with him for quite a few years and I think you'll see us to broaden out that brand a little bit."

So yes, a fourth series is no sure thing, but don't be surprised if you see more of that special "MacFarlane" brand of humor touted, above. (Oh, and that horse is supposed to be mentally handicapped, because why not, right Seth?) And don't worry, Mr. MacFarlane, CollegeHumor has some ideas for your next series, after the jump.

"Family Guy" Non Sequiturs Explained! Episode 8-10: "Big Man on Hippocampus"
January 4th 2010 at 1:29pm by WillEdmondson

It's a new year, but it's still the same season of "Family Guy." In last night's episode, the Griffins played "Family Feud"; Peter was overcome by amnesia, and then picked up Tiffani-Amber Thiessen. Now that's an eventful day! But you don't care about that. You want to know about the episode's non sequiturs! Let's talk about them, after the jump.

Stewie Griffin To Read Letterman's Top Ten List Tonight
December 21st 2009 at 6:14pm by WillEdmondson

Tonight, Stewie Griffin -- yes, of FOX's "Family Guy" -- will read David Letterman's Top Ten list. It's a little confusing, since Letterman airs over on CBS, and MacFarlane basically runs FOX these days. Maybe this is ol' Seth's way of petitioning his network for a late-night show of his own? I wouldn't put it past him, considering his past foray into (awful) variety shows. But, then again, this isn't the first time an animated Griffin has read the Top Ten list, as you can see after the jump. Let's hope Stewie's list is as funny tonight than his dad's was in 2006.

"Family Guy" Non Sequiturs Explained! Episode 8-08: "Dog Gone"
November 30th 2009 at 6:49am by WillEdmondson

Last night on "Family Guy," we were treated to yet another lesson in racial stereotypes: Hispanic housekeepers watch Telemundo, never leave your house, and don't act like their white employers. Oh, and Brian faced a moral conundrum when he hit a dog on his way home from a bar. But that's not all! We also had Chris Matthews making fun of his own forehead, a few "Family Circus" jokes, and even confusion over the regional pronunciation of "PETA" and "Peter." Those and the rest of last night's non sequiturs, explained and graded after the jump.

"Family Guy" Non Sequiturs Explained! Episode 8-07: "Jerome Is the New Black"
November 23rd 2009 at 1:12pm by WillEdmondson

Last night on "Family Guy," Peter and his Bearded Clam drinking cohorts searched for a replacement for Cleveland Brown, who moved from Quahog to 8:30. Of course, because this is a Seth MacFarlane show, the group decides that it needs a black friend, and it just happens to find a blaxploitation character named Jerome at the bar. There are a few story twists, and a lot of formulaic and predictable racist jokes, because come on, the episode is titled "Jerome Is the New Black." Get it? That's a pun.

But I realized something yesterday, and that's that the success of a "Family Guy" episode is not dependent on its storyline, but rather on the famous non sequiturs that fill the space between the "edgy" racist and/or sexist jokes. So this week, let's try something new: Let's rate the episode's non sequiturs, and decode them if necessary. Because let's be honest, kids under 25; do you have any idea who "Mr. Furley" is? Or people over 25, do you know why making a "Kevin Connolly is short" joke is funny? Those and more, explained after the jump.

11 Things You Should Know About Rocky and Bullwinkle
November 20th 2009 at 5:13pm by JulieKlausner

I'm going to assume you already know at least 11 things about Rocky and Bullwinkle , because they are terrific and you should be a fan of what are, this week, 50-year-old cartoon characters. So here is a list, via Mental Floss, of 11 more things you can add to the 11-at-least things you already know, if you didn't already.

Look, I didn't mean to be all uppity. I didn't know any of these things. And it's not for my lack of familiarity with the show, because I spent at least two hours a day watching "Fractured Fairy Tales" from 2 to 3 AM in my dorm room, stoned as a Shirley Jackson protagonist. Bullwinkle, per fact #11, may be able to remember every single thing he ever ate, but I can barely remember the name of a single class I took that year. Oh, college.

Anyway, happy birthday to the moose and squirrel fruits of Jay Ward's fantastic imagination. And save some cake for that poor nerdy ginge, Sherman.

"Family Guy" Episode 8-06: "Quagmire's Baby"
November 16th 2009 at 1:34pm by WillEdmondson

Remember when "South Park" went after "Family Guy's" non sequiturs and hypothesized that Seth MacFarlane's writing staff was just a bunch of manatees that pushed "idea balls" with their noses? Well, last night the manatees earned their lettuce (how else would you pay them?), because that bit about Fred Flintstone's wild police chase was hilarious. But, the "main" plotline of the episode -- Glen Quagmire discovering a baby on his doorstep -- was not. Let's talk about it, after the jump.
