Look, fellows and ladies. If you know me from Adam or Eve, you know that I'm a huge "SNL" apologist. Critics and lay-people alike rip "Saturday Night Live" apart like it was sub- Zarin Fabrics-grade rayon-- "It's a waste of space." "It's not as good as it was in 19-blanketty blank." "I don't like that Andy Samberg because I am secretly anti-Semitic." But I like it! I watch it every week, and not out of spite! That said, this week's show, hosted by Jude Law, was, in my opinion, a dud. More on this week's episode after the jump!
continue readingIt's already been quite a year for Betty White: a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild (which she discusses in the "Entertainment Tonight" clip above), talk of a Daytime Emmy nomination for her role on "The Bold and the Beautiful," and a very well-received Snickers ad, which aired during the Super Bowl. And things are only getting better: in a move that will delight the nearly half a million members of the Facebook group that agitated for it, White will host "Saturday Night Live" this season. Not sure you'll watch? Maybe the lineup of sketches from White's "Saturday Night Live" episode, which we have brought back from the future*, will change your mind: you can see it after the jump.
*It's not actually from the future. I just made it up.
continue readingFor as much as I love "Saturday Night Live's" Digital Shorts -- like the brilliant "Tizzle Wizzle Show," above -- sometimes their "weird" schtick gets a little tiresome. You know, the shorts like "Megan's Roommate," where the joke seems to go on a bit too long? It can make two minutes seem like twenty -- an awkward twenty.
Landline TV gets this, and recently spoofed The Lonely Island's success...in a digital short of their own. Yes, the result is so hyper-meta that I think it might overheat from its own self-awareness. But it is also pretty funny (and kind of NSFW), and it's waiting for you after the jump.

Did you guys see "SNL" this week? Or most of what your DVR taped? There was some sort of athletic competition, or "game," clogging up the live feed, so the broadcast got pushed back by half an hour or so. But that's okay, because my DVR knew better! I'm just kidding, it was like "DUHHHHH," and only taped the first hour of the show. Thank God for this website and my fantastic, wonderful, Godlike employer, for hosting the entire episode right here! Because it turns out it was a really funny one. Charles Barkley hosted, for some reason, and Alicia Keys was the musical guest. Did you know that her last name is "Keys" because she plays the piano keys? That might not be true, but you must admit that she does play the piano. She's like an urban Deborah Gibson, which I don't mean as an insult, although it took me years to come around to Debbie Gibson. Do you know she owns a performing arts camp for young people? It's called Deborah Gibson's Electric Youth...camp. Interesting, right? But THIS IS NOT ABOUT DEBRORAH GIBSON'S CAMP. Read more of this week's "SNL" recap after the jump.

When "I'm On a Boat" premiered on "Saturday Night Live" in February, I claimed that it was the "funniest Digital Short yet." I stand behind that sentiment, but then -- naturally -- time ran its course and the clip became a cliché. Still, the song managed to age fairly gracefully, it (shockingly) got nominated for a Grammy, and best of all, the Lonely Island dudes remained goofballs. Said Andy Samberg after the Grammy nomination, "We weren't expecting it at all. The main reason for this is that we don't consider ourselves musicians."
But today, it pains me to announce that "I'm On a Boat" is officially over, America. Today, T-Pain and Andy Samberg released a new video promoting T-Pain's "I Am T-Pain" iPhone app, and it's just cringeworthy and old. Combine that with the other clips I've assembled, after the jump...and let's just all be thankful that "On the Ground" hasn't suffered the same fate yet.

Blake Lively hosted this week's "Saturday Night Live," and she, first of all, was better than January Jones, which was a huge relief. I know that all blonds on shows bloggers watch are not the same blonds! But Serena on "Gossip Girl" is sort of a snooze, and who knows from Blake Lively before she ambled into that role in the first place, all creamy limbs and pert breasts and sort of looking like a young Ellen Barkin, before Ron Perelman and Todd Solondz took turns ruining her.
Blake Lively mostly lived up to her name, and also kind of up to the name of the delicious '80s cottage cheese, in that she was both lively and she kept her appearances in sketches light. She was so light, in fact, that one of the most memorable bits of the night, the digital short, "Shy Ronnie," starred musical guest Rihanna. More like Shy Lively? Find out after the jump!
Now that we've all had time to digest the news that former "Family Ties" star Meredith Baxter is a lesbian. In fact, Baxter's announcement got so much attention that it overshadowed other press appearances by some of her TV-mom peers. Check those out after the jump.
* In this case, what we are calling "news" should be understood as "made-up stories."
continue readingTaylor Swift won't have to share the stage (we hope) with Kanye West on November 7 when she hosts and performs on "Saturday Night Live." Swift joins a long list of folks who have pulled double duty on the show, including Ludacris, Jennifer Lopez, Dolly Parton, and MC Hammer.
"I've been thinking about skit ideas for a long time," the 19-year-old Swift told the Associated Press. "There are definitely some hilarious things that have happened to me over the past couple of months that I think will be pretty substantial skits." More after the jump.
"Saturday Night Live" opened its last episode by taking shots at President Obama's lack of accomplishments -- although it did give him full credit for killing a fly. Was the show being fair?
Yahoo ran down the list, which included Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, Afghanistan, health care, global warming, immigration, gays in the military, executive powers, and torture. In the end, Yahoo says that the show's claims are probably not valid "because, as illustrated by the old adage about how one shouldn't watch sausage or legislation get made, the process of 'change' and getting anything done in Washington is a long and messy one, and Obama is merely nine months into his term as president."
But what about Andy Samberg's claims in the Digital Short "On the Ground"? We break them down after the jump.
"Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update Thursday" knocked its second episode out of the park. The cold open was based around President Obama's recent media blitz, but was really just an excuse for the cast to show off some of their phenomenal impressions. Except Kenan Thompson, whose impression of "SportsCenter" anchor Stuart Scott sounds suspiciously just like a louder Kenan Thompson. You can't win them all, Lorne Michaels. But let's check out some of the episode's highlights, after the jump.
