"Battlestar Galactica" Movie in The Works
August 14th 2009 at 10:21am by MattHimes

Good morning, nerds. Variety reports that Unversal has tapped Bryan Singer ("X-Men," "Superman Returns," "The Usual Suspects") to direct a "Battlestar Galactica" movie. No, not like the straight-to-DVD "The Plan" (trailer above). This a full-on, big-screen, movie-movie we're talking about.

When it comes to the Galactiverse, Singer wasn't downloaded yesterday. The Variety article notes that he flirted with the idea of reviving the original 1970s series back in 2001.

But then there's this disturbing tidbit:

"It's not clear whether Ronald Moore, exec producer of the recent series, will be invited to write the screenplay, but Singer will clearly put his own creative stamp on the project, as the studio indicates that the film will be 'a complete reimagination.'"

Not clear whether Ron Moore will participate?!?! A complete reimagination?!?! So help me Gods, Singer, if you frak this up...

Sci Fi Network Founder Also Thinks "SyFy" Is Dumb
March 24th 2009 at 2:19pm by TaraAriano

My esteemed colleague Will Edmondson is not the only commentator who thinks that the Sci Fi Network's efforts to rebrand itself as "SyFy" is a bad idea: one of the network's original founders isn't a fan either. Mitch Rubenstein, who sold the venture to USA Networks nearly 20 years ago, speculates that sci fi luminary Isaac Asimov would call the move "just plain dumb" -- and Rubenstein knew the man, so he's probably right. I didn't know Asimov, but I feel pretty confident that if he heard current Sci Fi president Dave Howe's contention that he would spell it "SyFy" while texting, he would not find such an argument terribly persuasive.

All I can add to this whole mishegoss is that I'm relieved that the show's cultiest hit series, "Battlestar Galactica," got to have a dignified and elegant sendoff with the real network name, and never had to suffer the shame and embarrassment of this "SyFy" business. Check out their final readthrough, above, and imagine how much they'd be rolling their eyes and gagging if they were doing it in the service of something that was trying to pass itself off as "SyFy."

Is It The Apocalypse Yet?
December 22nd 2008 at 10:13pm by TaraAriano

According to economics professor Art Caden, the apocalypse is not quite upon us, yet. But since we know it's not far off, Caden thinks we should cut out all this environmental nonsense and get cracking building a Battlestar. Happy holidays, everyone! But seriously, "Galactica" is such a great show that it could get anyone thinking about living in a big tin can with lots of sexy people, as in the webisode above. (Next season starts January 16, eeeee!)

Don't Nerds Still Have Holiday Shopping They Should Be Doing?
December 21st 2008 at 9:22pm by TaraAriano

I'm only half a geek at best -- I love "Battlestar Galactica," but I still needed the refresher above to prepare for the upcoming final season -- but even I was impressed by the research and artistry that had to have gone into io9's sci-fi connectivity chart. Really, they had me the color-coding. It's sci-fi's GUT!
