In its short life, the microblogging service Twitter has been the butt of many a joke, from the Twitter Tracker on Conan O'Brien's (short-lived) "Tonight Show" to...well, last night's episode of "The Simpsons." But if even O'Brien himself has come around on Twitter, is it time for the rest of pop culture to catch up? After all, there is evidence that Twitter can actually facilitate positive change in the world. Find out how after the jump.
continue readingThere's been rumors of "Zoolander 2" for a while, and considering the number of times stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson have acted together (proof above), it seemed inevitable that the pair would eventually team up on the runway again. That's good news, because if it's anything like the original "Zoolander," "Zoolander 2" will be hysterical and the best.
Now, according to Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke, Stiller is co-writing a script for the sequel with partner Jusin Theroux, who recently wrote "Iron Man 2" and "Tropic Thunder." Jonah Hill is reportedly in negotiations to play the movie's villain, and though Owen Wilson hasn't formally signed on yet, I think it's safe to assume that he will. The plan is for Theroux to direct the sequel, and he's heading to Paris's Fashion Week to "immerse himself in what is current in fashion." Let's wish him luck, because as "Bruno" showed us, too much "immersion" is sometimes a bad thing.
We can hear you now: "'Movie Monday 5' -- again? Didn't we already vote on this, and weren't you going to see 'Dear John'?" Yes, and yes. But Will was felled by illness on Monday, February 8, and then of course Monday, February 15 was a holiday. So we're going to call those two Mondays a wash and try this again. After the jump, you can either reaffirm your desire for us to recap "Dear John," or choose one of the other two movie challengers.
continue readingAbove, Leonardo DiCaprio explains that he, like virtually everyone else between the ages of 14-35, thinks "Jersey Shore" is "funny," and can recite the show's lines from memory. In other words, "Celebrities: They're Just Like Us!" Except that's an oversimplification, because Leonardo DiCaprio's TiVo is programmed by his personal assistant, and he watches the show next to his supermodel girlfriend. Still, as you may have heard, the "Jersey Shore" kids were blown away to learn, upon meeting DiCaprio, the actor went up to them and was "really excited to meet them." But hold on...a man who makes over $20 million per movie is that pumped to meet people who make $200 per episode? In the words of GOB Bluth, "COME ON!"
So let's get the real story: According to the actor, Snooki, The Situation, and Co. came up to him in a club. He shook their hands, and "yelled some of the funny lines" at them. In other words, he treated them the way kids treat gorillas at the zoo. That seems much more likely, and you know what? Compared to the way the "Jersey Shore" cast portrayed themselves on television, DiCaprio was hardly demeaning in comparison.
Last night, "Access Hollywood" proved why it is one of our nation's most respected and treasured news outlets by putting "Jersey Shore's" "The Situation" on the Grammy red carpet. Really, if this can't lock up a Pulitzer for excellence in journalism, I don't know what to think anymore.
Anyway, Katy Perry was quite pleased to have the opportunity to chat with MTV's newest prince on her way to the awards, and even took it upon herself to get the guy to take his shirt off. Sure, as all loyal "Shore" fans know, getting The Situation to take his shirt off isn't really an accomplishment. But doesn't it say something when a singer is more excited about meeting Snooki and The Situation than she is about going to the most prestigious award show in her field?
Rumors continue to swirl about the cast of "Jersey Shore" driving a hard bargain for a second season with MTV. Despite having signed a two-year contract with the network, the cast has banded together to charge higher per-episode rates. When MTV doubled their price to $10K per episode and threatened to choose new cast members if the offer wasn't accepted, Ronnie and J-WOWW finally caved and signed on. The rest have yet to agree, however -- despite passing their deadline of Monday, January 25.
TMZ reports that MTV already has replacements lined up for those who drive too hard a bargain, but if this is the case, why hasn't the network had a firm hand about this? The network's obviously bluffing, is why. (In other news, this business of "replacements" spoils my idea of MTV doing a spinoff show about the Season 2 audition process.) Bottom line: MTV is obviously going to pay the Season 1 cast members whatever they want, and then Ronnie and J-WOWW will get pissed that they're getting paid less than the others, and there will be drama, and it will be hilarious.
I have a few questions, though: has Angelina been offered a chance for a comeback? What's up with Sammi and Ronnie, and when is Us Weekly doing a cover story on them?
Apparently, the most difficult bargainers are Pauly D and Mike "The Situation," who explained to Billy Bush that he's "trying to be a gentleman" about it (see video, above). This probably means he's trying to get MTV to pay for his gym membership, as well as an unlimited charge account at Ed Hardy, both of which seem like fairly reasonable requests.
Vinny is still holding out as well, since he could always go to law school instead. The kid's gotta weigh his options, people! As for Snooki, she's been reportedly shopping around for offers on "Snookin' For Love," a spinoff about her dating misadventures (which got a shameless plug during the "Jersey Shore" finale), but whether she would have to ditch Seaside Heights for her own gig remains to be seen.
While $10K per episode may sound hefty, let's recall that "The Hills" kids reportedly get at least seven times that amount, are vastly less entertaining, and get lower ratings. This seems like an easy choice: cough it up, MTV.
The name Jennifer Lopez brings to mind a lot of things. Hoop earrings, obviously, and the curvy "Glow by J-Lo" perfume bottle that seems to be wearing a diamond belly-chain.
A few things that she doesn't remind me of include smoky Irish bars in New York City, corporate lawyers, and Neil Patrick Harris. But that's all about to change! J.Lo has just confirmed that she's going to be guest-starring on "How I Met Your Mother" this March. There's no word yet as to the character she'll play, but there are also rumors that she'll be appearing on "Glee" as well (singing and/or doing some kind of dance number, I hope). Her rapidly expanding repertoire is obviously meant to create some buzz around her new album, "Love," which drops in April.
I have a few guesses about her "HIMYM" character, after the jump.
continue reading"Jersey Shore" hero DJ Pauly D is enjoying his fifteen minutes in every possible way, from hanging out with Leonardo DiCaprio in L.A. clubs to teaching "Access Hollywood" host Billy Bush about his postmodern conceptions of interpersonal relationships (above). But Pauly D is a sensitive sort, and would like to wish all the ladies out there a happy Valentine's Day. If you're an attractive lady, however, the wily Pauly D has a very special (and kind of NSFW) gift for you. You've been warned, but hit "continue reading," below for his holiday wishes, after the jump.

In case you haven't heard already, the new Starz series, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has a lot of nudity in it. We're talking full-frontal, kids. Did I mention there's a lot of sex, too? And a lot of sweaty, grunting, oiled-up dudes grappling with each other? Moreover, there's a lot of bloody violence, which is made either more or less graphic by the fact that it's stylized, "300"-style, with slow-motion streams of blood that hang in midair after spurting out of a man's jugular. As star John Hannah puts it, "We're really pushing the boundaries." Last night, Sling.com chatted with John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, and Andy Whitfield about their new series, which premieres on Friday (and has Starz so excited that they've already ordered a second season). See the full interviews, after the jump.
continue readingLady Gaga appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" yesterday, and the two of them mostly talked about what it's like to be so down to earth. Haha! No they didn't. Mostly, the two gals with "ah" sounds at the end of their respective names talked about Gaga's process and the inspiration behind some of her most infamous looks, like her bloody "VMA" costume, which was apparently inspired by Princess Diana. They didn't touch on the look she debuted recently on "Access Hollywood," so I'm just going to say she thought of it while watching "Dr. Strangelove," drinking a cocktail that had one of those little umbrellas in them.
As far as credibility is concerned, I believed Gaga when she told Oprah that she was one of her idols, but when she confessed to being a "secret foodie" and eating fried chicken before the taping, I had to make sure I was hearing her properly. Doesn't Gaga not eat? Maybe she misunderstood the question and thought Oprah was asking her whether she was interested in wearing a coat made out of fried chicken. Come to think of it, I'd be pretty interested in wearing a coat like that, too. It sounds warm and delicious!
