The upcoming "MacGruber" movie held its world premiere at South by Southwest in Austin Monday night, and the preliminary reviews are in! What did people think of it? Well, here's Bryan Curtis from The Daily Beast:
"After the screening Monday, [director Jorma] Taccone said he was worried MacGruber and St. Elmo’s incredibly graphic sex scene could give the movie an NC-17 rating. And Taccone wasn’t kidding."
Here's Quint at Ain't It Cool News:
"There's not a ton of plot to this film, but there really doesn't need to be. It's a film about different types of personalities clashing while insane sh*t happens."
But wait, wait! Those are compliments. The consensus seems to be that this is a very raunchy comedy homage to the '80s action movie tradition of "Die Hard" and "Lethal Weapon." Curtis explains that the movie is so firmly set in the '80s that there is a portrait of Ronald Reagan looking down on MacGruber as he's given his orders at the Pentagon. So, in sum, this is "Lethal Weapon" meets "The Hangover," directed by a "Lonely Islander," cast with "Saturday Night Live" players, and featuring Val Kilmer as the villain. Oh -- and if you'll recall, its redband trailer is already pretty great. The movie comes out April 23, so the only question is left is how soon to start lining up for tickets?
Look, fellows and ladies. If you know me from Adam or Eve, you know that I'm a huge "SNL" apologist. Critics and lay-people alike rip "Saturday Night Live" apart like it was sub- Zarin Fabrics-grade rayon-- "It's a waste of space." "It's not as good as it was in 19-blanketty blank." "I don't like that Andy Samberg because I am secretly anti-Semitic." But I like it! I watch it every week, and not out of spite! That said, this week's show, hosted by Jude Law, was, in my opinion, a dud. More on this week's episode after the jump!

This weekend's episode of "Saturday Night Live" starred Zach Galifianakis -- and if we could offer a critique, it's that it could have been a lot more Galifianakis-y. Watch the full episode, above, and then let's talk about it after the jump.

Hey guys! Remember J.Lo? Come on, yes you do. Jennifer Lopez? She was a fly girl? With a prominent rear end? She was half of "Bennifer," in The 90's, when journalists were just figuring out that if you combined the names of two celebrities who were dating, it would be hilarious? Well, anyway, she is still alive. And this week she hosted "Saturday Night Live"! The recap is after the jump.
You'd think that, in the first thirteen episodes of "Glee," Sue Sylvester made enough enemies to last most fictional characters a lifetime. But the show's producers evidently don't agree: the news just hit that the latest high-profile guest star to join the show is Molly Shannon, who'll play a McKinley High astronomy teacher/badminton coach who, naturally, clashes with Sue, because everyone clashes with Sue. Though Michael Ausiello's write-up on the casting doesn't say whether Shannon will sing, she has plenty of experience in putting on a show. Above, see a sketch featuring Shannon as her classic "Saturday Night Live" character, high school student Mary Katherine Gallagher, as she tries out for a talent show, which suggests that "Glee" should be right in her wheelhouse; after the jump, more evidence that Shannon should be able to handle whatever the "Glee" producers throw at her.

Man-meat cougar plaything Ashton Kutcher hosted this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live," and he did a good job of it! Check out this week's recap after the jump.

"Mad Men" star Jon Hamm has already been hailed as the second coming of George Clooney for his rugged, midwestern good looks and Old Hollywood style. But after his second turn hosting "Saturday Night Live," is it more accurate to say he's actually a young Alec Baldwin? Read the recap after the jump and see if you're not convinced.
continue readingFor as much as I love "Saturday Night Live's" Digital Shorts -- like the brilliant "Tizzle Wizzle Show," above -- sometimes their "weird" schtick gets a little tiresome. You know, the shorts like "Megan's Roommate," where the joke seems to go on a bit too long? It can make two minutes seem like twenty -- an awkward twenty.
Landline TV gets this, and recently spoofed The Lonely Island's success...in a digital short of their own. Yes, the result is so hyper-meta that I think it might overheat from its own self-awareness. But it is also pretty funny (and kind of NSFW), and it's waiting for you after the jump.
continue readingJason Mraz -- your younger sister's senstitive best friend's favorite singer -- was the subject of one of my favorite "Saturday Night Live" spoofs this season (above). In it, Jack Johnson hosts "The Mellow Show," where the Mraz, Johnson, and Dave Matthews -- a.k.a. the official soundtrack of Brown University -- share stories about their mellow lives and songs. Disc golf! (That joke will be a lot funnier after you see the sketch.)
Andy Samberg (as Johnson), host Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Mraz), and Bill Hader (Matthews) nail their characters, and even though the actual Dave Matthews's Ozzy Osbourne impression leaves something to be desired, it's still pretty great. But don't take my word for it. We just got a bunch of clips from a Jason Mraz concert in Chicago, and you can compare the actual Mraz to "SNL's" after the jump.
continue readingThe red-band trailer for "MacGruber" went online recently, and is available to watch here. Keep in mind that red-band trailers include dirty words, themes, and thoughts, so if you haven't heard the language used on a middle-school playground at recess, you might be very offended! Now that you've been warned, here's what I think about the trailer: It is very, very funny!
I should've known better than to doubt "The Lonely Island" guys, and the script did get the Bill Hader seal of approval...so it shouldn't be surprising that the trailer is hilarious. Still, this movie looks great. Val Kilmer as the bad guy seems like excellent casting, the Michael Bay-like cinematography around the ridiculous action sequences looks hilarious, and it maintains the awkwardness of the "Saturday Night Live" sketches, like the ones above. The movie's slated to come out April 23, and I'm sure the "SNL" posse will have other viral ways of promoting the movie between now and then. But until those clips hit the Internet, I'm happy watching the "MacGruber" trailer another 5 times...and I've already watched it three times today.
