2010 Oscar Nominations: They're Finally Here!
February 2nd 2010 at 2:43pm by TaraAriano

We've suffered through the People's Choice and Golden Globes and Critics' Choice and SAGs, but now we can quit playing: the 2010 Oscar nominations are official, as of this morning. Watch the announcement above; also, read the complete list.

What to make of this list? "The Early Show" welcomed Jess Cagle of Entertainment Weekly for some expert analysis.

Which is weird, because normally their award-show guy is Dave Karger? I guess he was back at the mothership, working on an article for this week's issue.

"The Early Show" also spoke with heavily favored Best Supporting Actress nominee Mo'Nique, as she reacted to the news. Bonus: if you ever wondered what Atlanta, GA looks like from overhead, wonder no more.

But how did the nominees get here? NYMag.com looks at the Oscar journey of one of this year's sure-thing nominees: Mo'Nique's "Precious" co-star Gabourey Sidibe, now a Best Actress contender.

Finally, in case you were wondering how to feel, plenty of commentators have already weighed in. Linda Holmes at NPR's Monkey See commented, of the expanded Best Picture race, "If the idea was to give viewers more of a rooting interest by nominating more movies they'd actually seen, it just may work." Lane Brown at Vulture cracks, "Of the ten nominees for Best Picture, we correctly guessed nine of them, with only The Blind Side 's inclusion over Invictus coming as a minor surprise (we guess the Academy only had space for one drama in which racism is fixed by sports)." Kyle Buchanan of Movieline pretty much agrees: "Invictus underwhelmed the town, but prognosticators still thought the Academy was Clint-crazy enough to nominate the film, despite recent shut-outs of Gran Torino and Flags of Our Fathers . In the meantime, another “racial reconciliation through football” drama was tearing up the box office. As Invictus faded, The Blind Side surged into its spot." And Mark Blankenship of The Critical Condition decides, "Overall, this is a cool slate of nominees. Diverse, worthy of argument, and generally representative of quality films. And I’ll admit… it is kind of cool that a few super-popular movie made the cut. It makes the conversation feel more rounded."

As for me: I'm most excited about the screenplay nomination for "In the Loop," and most disappointed that "Moon" was completely overlooked; it was the best movie I saw last year. And you?
