"How I Met Your Mother" Creators Sign On For New Comedy About "The Next Stage of Adulthood"

"How I Met Your Mother" creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have signed on to create another comedy series, their first venture since beginning "HIMYM" in 2005. Their new contract (which begins in June) allows them to continue Ted Mosby's hunt for Our Mother for three more years while developing the yet-unnamed show, which will chronicle the lives of a young couple and their group of friends. Sound familiar?

The show's comedic premise isn't the only thing that'll carry over: the duo has tapped their current writer-producer team, Kourtney Kang and Joe Kelly, for the project. Basically, the only thing different about this show is that it's set in Pittsburgh (which isn't really that different, because "HIMYM" could really be set anywhere in America), and that the characters are supposedly a little older. "The new show is similar tonally to 'HIMYM' and investigates the next chapter, the next stage of adulthood," explained Bays.

Here's what I think it means: the action will revolve around a married couple, Sargeant and Violet, and their best friend, Ed, who's looking for the love of his life. Ed will have some history with a radio show host named Roberta; he'll also have a womanizing best friend named Bernie. The five friends will gather regularly at a small neighborhood bar called MacDooley's to drink beer and discuss their relationships.

Since the show will portray the "next stage" of adulthood, however, Sargeant and Violet are considering children. Problems arise, however, when Violet can't get pregnant (it takes them a full season to figure out her infertility). In the second season, Roberta agrees to be the surrogate carrier of Violet and Sargeant's child. Of course, this turns into twins, because surrogate children always are. Seeing Roberta pregnant makes Ed realize that he really wants to be a dad soon, which is problematic because he doesn't have a wife. He panics that he'll never find "the one," and decides to adopt an orphan from Nigeria, who miraculously turns out to be the long-lost nephew of Bernie's adopted brother.

All this baby-fever makes Bernie grow tired of his bed-hopping and realize that he, too, wants to settle down. He's not ready for children, but he decides to put some serious effort into meeting The One. He joins a matchmaking service called Love Solutions (The Pittsburgh Chapter) and begins a never-ending series of blind dates. Meanwhile, the fivesome will cultivate an odd holiday tradition known as "Spanksmas" (see video, above).

The show's cast, of course, will be made up of the former cast of "Dollhouse," since Bays and Thomas love themselves some Whedonites (although hopefully Eliza Dushku will sit this one out, for all of our sakes).

Party on, "Mother"-lovers. We'll be watching.
