Above, the official statement: Sarah Palin -- one-time Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and current Governor of Alaska -- will be leaving office effective July 26. Palin's time in office has, of course, been tumultuous; even before joining John McCain's Presidential ticket last fall, there was an ethics investigation. And soon after that, there was the revelation about her daughter Bristol's unplanned pregnancy. And then...actually, just read this story Todd Purdum wrote about her for Vanity Fair.
Though Palin hasn't announced what she plans to do now, Andrea Mitchell has reported that Palin is leaving politics permanently. If that's true, there are certainly Republicans who will miss the glamour and youth that Palin has injected into the party. But more importantly, there are late-night comedians who will miss the material she has provided them with.
Tina Fey's profile skyrocketed last fall when she returned to "Saturday Night Live" to portray Palin in several episodes and specials. One of Fey's greatest Sarah Palin moments:
