2009 Best Actress Oscar Predictions: From the Bullpen
February 18th 2009 at 5:18pm by WillEdmondson

Today Charlotte and I continued our Oscar picks discussion, but before we reveal our picks for Best Actress, I would like to announce that this is now a competition. That's right, we decided to make it interesting. The stakes? The winner will make a torturous playlist of five clips that the loser will be forced to sit through, no fast-forwarding or skipping allowed.

We also received some comments on our last post (they were great, keep 'em coming!), that we'd like to respond to:

Bunting, we apologize for not recognizing Richard Jenkins from "Six Feet Under," and we appreciate your noble defense of "The Visitor." We're still Deep-sixing his Oscar nomination, though.

Hennessy, you raise a valid point about "WALL-E's" stage direction, and Charlotte agrees with you. However, I think once "WALL-E's" characters opened their mouths, it wasn't that spectacular. (I think "Milk" will win best screenplay anyway.)

On to the Discussion:

[16:09] Will: first off, in the Richard Jenkins deep-six, thanks for coming category, Melissa Leo in "Frozen River"
[16:09] Will: like, she has no chance, enjoy the swag, and hope her dress is pretty
[16:09] Will: though I loves me some shots of the St. Lawrence River. Upstate pride.
[16:10] Charlotte: yes. i agree

[16:10] Will: next up, in the "Brad Pitt you're hot but still no dice" category, Angelina Jolie in "Changeling"
[16:11] Charlotte: that whole movie was dumb. I thought angelina jolie was wearing a gollum-esque hood on the billboard ads, especially because "changeling" sounds tolkien-esque, or some kind of hobbit word.

[16:18] Will: next, Meryl Streep in Doubt
[16:20] Charlotte: yeah, i mean, i feel like she's this amazing amazing actress that everyone's obsessed with and yeah, she's great, but she never like, leaves me feeling electrified
[16:21] Will: I just dont think she'll win, she's so good in everything that if she gets it for "Doubt," they should just give it to her every year.
[16:21] Charlotte: yeah

[16:21] Will: the controversial one, Kate Winslet in "The Reader" instead of "Revolutionary Road"
[16:21] Charlotte: yeah! whatever, i love her
[16:22] Will: but, she can't win an oscar for a movie she didn't win a golden globe for
[16:23] Charlotte: anyway, i do love kate, but I don't think she'll win.
[16:23] Charlotte: i think she's fantastic

[16:24] Will: so that leaves anne hathaway, and though it pains me to say this, anne will probably take it home
[16:25] Charlotte: i think so too, and she has my vote, but as a person, i think she's unbelievably annoying
[16:26] Charlotte: i'm always amazed by great actors/actresses who are supposedly duds as people, you'd think that they could at least act cool
[16:26] Will: excellent point.
[16:26] Charlotte: but no, she's just horribly annoying. witness any of her interviews/talk show appearances

FINAL PICK: WILL & CHARLOTTE- ANNE HATHAWAY.

I DO think she was great in 'Rachel Getting Married' (more on that here: http://www.liftingfogblog.com), but doubt very much that she'll be leaving the Kodak theater - or wherever - on Sunday with a statue in her hand. Kate Winslet, despite being nominated for the wrong f*cking movie, has been preordained this year to win her first Oscar. Not that it's undeserved - she's a fantastic actress, probably the best of her generation - it's just the Academy likes to rectify past mistakes. 'Return of the King' nabs 11 statues. Scorsese wins for 'The Departed'. Etc. These things aren't awarded in a vacuum.
