Last night we got our second taste of post-Conan "Late Night," and I think I'm starting to get what NBC is saying with their new Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon triple threat.
After mentioning Leno's move to 10 pm, Fallon says (sarcastically) that it's great to have him around. Because after Leno, the local news, and Conan's "Tonight Show," people will be pumped for more talk. We feel your pain, Mr. Fallon, but bucking the establishment before your show airs? That's a bold move. (On the bright side, at least you're not Carson Daly.)
But there's more from Jimmy, chillin' in his pocket T-shirt, checkin' out his vlog comments on his iMac, talkin' about his house band The Roots... it all seems a little like one of those "Mac vs. PC" ads, doesn't it? The introduction to his set, which includes rising trap doors, plasma screens for video Skype, and space for fans of a band to be on stage with the band, makes the whole thing feel like a "TRL" spinoff. (I bet Carson Daly is pissed.)
It's as if NBC is saying, "Here you go, young people! Jimmy Fallon is for you!" They'll get the pesky old people out of the way with Leno and the local news, siphon off the remaining non-"with it" people with Conan, and then reward my generation for its patience with a revamp of our beloved "TRL," hosted by the star of "Fever Pitch" and "Taxi." NBC is either evil, genius, or trying to make Carson Daly's head explode.
